NHL All tar Weekend in Ottawa

Getting ready for the NHL All Star Skills Competition!

Parliament Building- Peace Tower

This past weekend I went to Ottawa for the first time for the NHL All Star Weekend! I must say that Ottawa was a fantastic city to visit and I truly enjoyed my time there. I was able to visit the Parliament buildings and learn all about the Canadian government. The city was buzzing with people for the All Star Weekend and fans from all teams were walking around town wearing their jerseys in support of their favorite teams.

The All Star Skills Competition was the first event I was able to attend and it was quite fun to watch! My favorite move of the night was Patrick Kane as superman in the breakaway challenge wearing the red cape and Clark Kent glasses. Both team Chara and Alfredson made the event very entertaining!

After the Skills Competition I was able to attend the NHL Molson Official After-Party and the event was fantastic! Walking into the Canadian themed venue you had to get your “passport” ticket stamped by the “border patrol” and you could walk around different areas that represented each major city in Canada.

The Calgary Room featured a fully stocked Saloon with entertainment provided by a country-singing band. If you were in the mood to try and ride a mechanical bull or try your hand at roping a mechanical bull you could do that too!

The Toronto Room featured the financial district with actors that were playing the part in a mock boardroom. This room also featured the streets and CN tower within the city. The funniest part of the Toronto Room was the fact that all the bartenders and chefs sported thick black-rimmed glasses that are quite the trend on the streets these days!

Montreal had it’s own Cirque De Soleil theme with trapeze artists, hula-hoop dancers, stilt walkers and contortionists. This was my favorite stop as I was just fascinated with it all!

Ottawa was represented with a scale model of the Parliament buildings and an amazing cover band that kept the tunes coming all night. Moving to the Vancouver Room you walked into an ice oasis with beautiful ice sculptors and VIP area that featured a back message area! Edmonton was also represented with a woodland theme and huge oil rig! What an amazing night!

The actual NHL All Star Game was the last event for the weekend and I loved every second of it! I was cheering for team Alfredsson but in the end Team Chara got the win. A fun surprise to all the fans in attendance was a performance by Drake! (They even let the players in the game come out to sit on the ice to watch). I was even able to get a good view of Prime Minister Stephen Harper in attendance at the game a few rows away from where I was sitting!

The time went by way to fast but I would love to get back to Ottawa soon. I wasn’t able to try a “BeaverTail” or skate on the canal this trip- but I hope to do so someday! Maybe if I get back there I can even take some time to visit Quebec too! This was certainly a weekend I will never forget!

St. Lawrence Market

St. Lawrence Market, Old Town Toronto

"Market" Treat!

Yesterday I visited the St. Lawrence Market located in old town Toronto. It was wonderful to walk around and see over 100 venders selling everything from fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, seafood, clothing and jewelry. It’s a great spot to grab a bite to eat as well, as many vendors offered deli sandwiches, wraps, baked goods, soups and salads. Yum!

There are three different venues within the market. There is the North Market that hosts large social gatherings and serves as the "Sunday Antique Market" with over 80 dealers. The South Market was originally the building that was Toronto’s first city hall! This is where over 50 vendors display everything from food to jewelry. If you are an aspiring chef the South Market has the Market Kitchen, which is a real cooking school and event venue!

If you are in the mood for a "historic treat" within the market then make sure you stop by St. Lawrence Hall, built in 1850 to serve as the City’s public meeting space. I did not get to see this venue up close but I am going to try and get there soon. I love learning about the history behind these venues in Toronto!

Country Strong Wedding

 Hullet Wildlife Conservation Area

Yes- that is me on a horse (after attending the wedding)!

"Country Wedding" Treat!

This past weekend I went to my first Canadian “country” wedding! I’m specifically referring to the location- as it was held at the Hullet Wildlife Conservation Area. The scenic views where the vows took place were quite lovely to see. The theme of the wedding was to embrace the farmland around the conservation area and the beauty of nature all around us. One of the unique aspects of this wedding was our seats- we were literally sitting on bails of hay! For me- this was a new experience to see at a wedding but it intertwined with the theme seamlessly.

As you can see above- after the wedding there were a group of horses (as people were getting ready to camp in the area) and I wanted to take a picture of them. I don’t normally get to see a bunch of horses together so when I asked to take a picture I got quite the surprise: I was asked to get on the horse! After almost two decades of ever getting on a horse (I had a terrible accident on a horse when I was little) I did it! It was exhilarating to be propped up on the saddle again and I got a few cheers from the other riders on horseback. To the shock of the others in attendance- it became a fun spectacle of myself (dressed up for a wedding) getting up on a horse for the first time. (I got a few remarks of being a city girl). J What a great way to cap of a beautiful ceremony! Where else would I be able to do this other than this country wedding?! This is a first for me here in Canada!

Hockey & Coldplay!

 Flyers stop the puck!

Leafs vs. Flyers

"Hockey" Treat- Leafs vs. Flyers!

So this past week I went to my first hockey game in Canada! I was quite excited (as I know tickets are hard to come by in Toronto). With a big thanks to Jim Gregory (from the NHL) I was able to not only see my first game here- but it was against the Flyers from my home city- Philadelphia!

The seats were great and the place was jammed packed! Although many Leafs fans went away from the game disappointed in the loss- I was quite happy to see the Flyers win! (Ok, I know it’s early but I think it will be a great season for all Flyers fans out there)! Hopefully, I’ll be able to see more games this season!

"Rockin" Treat!

Coldplay @ MuchMusic's Studio on Queen Street

 Great stage!

Love the new music!

Last night I also had an unexpected “rockin” treat as Coldplay held a concert at MuchMusic's parking lot on Queen Street. Walking home I heard the music and to my utter surprise they were playing a free concert for all to see! They are getting ready to release their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, on Oct. 24 and this promotional appearance was a fantastic idea! The show had fireworks, large video screens, laser lights, butterfly shaped confetti and circular backdrops.

They also played some of their “older” songs like Clocks, The Scientist, In My Place and Fix You- but they played many songs off their new album as well. Songs like Mylo Xyloto/Hurts Like Heaven, Every Teardrop is A Waterfall, and Charlie Brown all sounded great. Click the link to watch some clips of this show from MuchMusic's website. Looks like it’s going to be a great tour!

Earthquake in Toronto!

An angel, dislodged from the southwest pinnacle of the "Gloria in Excelsis" or central tower, lies on the roof of the Washington National Cathedral following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake which rumbled through Washington on Aug. 24.

Well, I had another first in Canada yesterday- I felt my first earthquake in Toronto! I must admit I have been sheltered in my thinking that I will never be in an earthquake on the east coast or in Canada- but now I know better! The quake originated in VA but the 5.8 magnitude shocker could be felt here in downtown Toronto. Original reports stated that the quake could be felt as far as New York City- but believe me it came up to Canada!

I was home at the time but at first was disorientated as to why my place was gently rocking back and forth. After a few seconds (realizing it was an earthquake) I started to get nervous about all of my art on the wall- for fear everything would start falling off! After about 10 seconds I started to get a seasick feeling hoping it would just stop. The gentle rocking motion did stop- and I quickly jumped online to hear updates about the earthquake from friends in the States. I was concerned to hear that three pinnacles in the central tower of the Washington National Cathedral, (the highest building in the city), broke off in the quake according to reports from The Washington Post. That area is close to my heart as I worked at a school on the Cathedral grounds so thankfully everyone (and overall structure) seems to be okay. (Scary to think I would have been sitting around the cathedral at that time for my break if I was there).

Thankfully, everyone is ok- but this rare event on the east coast has me realize that an earthquake can happen anywhere!

1 LOVE T.O.

“1 LOVE” Treat!

If you haven’t heard of 1 LOVE T.O. then you must read this post! Adding to the dimension of those “I Heart (Whatever City you are in)” the 1 Love T.O. is all about pride of our city. According to his website, “1 LOVE T.O. is about presenting that to the rest of the world. It’s a hometown pride that’s never been articulated before. It’s a movement that bridges the gaps – between cultures, neighborhoods, interests and generations. 1 LOVE T.O. is the unifying voice of our city…Forget about the individualistic message of “I love wherever”. Toronto is different. Toronto is one. And we are all the heart of this magnificent city”. It’s a great message and a huge success.

Normally, you can only find this merchandise at random “pop-up” shops that appear around the city however, that is all about to change. It has been announced that 1 LOVE TO is opening its first store tonight 6pm-10pm at 707 Dundas Sreet West as part of the Scadding Court Community Centre’s Live Local Market. Tonight’s block party is hosted by T-rex-Xx (Host of MuchMusic's Rapcity) and will feature music from Future The Prince (Drake’s Official DJ) and D-Lux (Blue Jays Official DJ). There will also be performances by P.Region, Shaun Boothe and A-Game (with some unannounced special guests). If you are into the art scene in TO- then you will be glad to hear there will also be live painting by Skam. I can’t wait!

Post this opening- if you feel the mood to dance to some 90’s hip-hop then the after party is definitely at The Ossington! From 10pm-2am the one and only DJ Brett Leonhardt showcases ‘95 Live’ tonight of course! It’s a fantastic Friday night in the T-Dot- hope to see you out!

Reposado Tequila Bar

“Jazzy Treat”

Last night I went to Reposado Tequila Bar and was pleasantly surprised at the laid back atmosphere and live music played! Reposado has Toronto’s largest selection of premium tequila in the heart of downtown west and is located off of Ossington Ave.

As the band trio started to set up I could tell we were in for a wonderful treat! While trying some local drinks and tapas I was eager to hear Spy vs. Sly vs. Spy play. With a drum set, double bass and electric guitar this trio was quite fun to listen to  and watch play! Check out Reposado’s website for live music each night- as there is often some great live jazz to hear!

Often when I walk by Reposado’s I find myself drawn to the music that flows into the street- so I’m glad I got to experience it firsthand last night! This place is a definite must see in Toronto!

Ride the Tiger at the Drake Hotel!

The Lounge at the Drake Hotel

“Soul & Motown” Treat!

Last night I went to the Drake Hotel to see an amazing band called, Ride the Tiger! They displayed a fantastic array of Soul and Motown classics, which featured the many musical talents of the band. With a booming voice the lead singer reminded me of Mayer Hawthorne (who is another favorite artist of mine).

The Drake itself is a staple in the Queen West neighborhood of Toronto. As stated on their website, “The Drake Hotel is a cultural, entertainment and hospitality landmark in Toronto. In the seven years since our opening, Drake has come to be known as an energetic hub for visual & performance art as well as dining and hospitality, thus providing one of Canada’s most unique and sought after hotel and culinary experiences. We are clearly more than a place to eat and sleep: we are a hotbed for culture. We eagerly await your arrival and open our doors to your hearts and minds".

Not only is the Drake Hotel a fantastic venue to visit when you want to hear great music but Ride the Tiger is definitely a must see band in Toronto! They will be playing the Drake on Monday nights but definitely check out their website for additional shows!

Rogers Cup Toronto

“Tennis Anyone?”

This is a great week for tennis as the Rogers Cup is here in Toronto! To start this tournament there are 56 singles players in the main draw (48 in qualifying draw) with 28 doubles teams in the main draw. The turf is hard court (deco turf) with Centre Court holding 10,300 seats! Last year (2010) Caroline Wozniacki won the championship in Montreal.

Taking a look at the history of this tournament they state, “Since 1892, the best women's tennis players in the world have showcased their skills on Canadian courts. Only Wimbledon and the U.S. Open have longer histories than the major Canadian stop, which is acknowledged by the tennis world to be one of the best-run tournaments on the Tour. Classified as a Premier 5 event under the WTA Tour Roadmap, Rogers Cup presented by National Bank offers US $2 million in prize money and attracts the brightest stars of women's tennis year after year”.

If you are a fan of tennis legends Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, Michael Chang, and John McEnroe are playing the Rogers Legends Cup in a round-robin tournament August 12-14th. This is bound to be a fantastic event!

I must say it’s a great experience watching any tennis match live. This is a great opportunity to see these professionals play in Toronto as they gear up for another grand slam in a few weeks. Don’t know which one that is?! Well, these professionals have to get ready for the US Open (August 29-September 11th)! So get out there this week and see some amazing tennis action live!

Civic Holiday

"August" Treat!

I am learning many new holidays in Canada such as the Civic Holiday, which takes place the first Monday in August. This statutory holiday in Canada is, “known by many names in different provinces. It's called Regatta Day in Newfoundland, Saskatchewan day in SK, British Columbia Day in BC, Natal Day in Nova Scotia and PEI, Simcoe Day in Toronto, Colonel By Day in Ottawa and Joseph Brant day in Burlington, ON and the list goes on and on. The Civic Holiday is commonly referred to as the August Long Weekend. It is probably the busiest day on highways as tens of thousands of families go camping, to cottages etc this weekend”.

As I posted before this weekend was a great time to celebrate the holiday in Toronto by seeing the Irie Music Festival. I found my way to Queens Park last night to hear a wonderful tribute to Bob Marley featuring Errol Blackwood. The guest of honor of the night included the granddaughter to the legend (Bob Marley) which capped off the night with Bushman who did a tribute to Peter Tosh. The festival was a fantastic event with great music, vendors, food, and art.

Edge Walk at the CN Tower!

Canadian Press reporter Alexandra Posadzki leans back 1,168 feet over Toronto

Scary Treat!

As I posted last month I have a fear of heights when it comes to going to the top of the CN Tower. For those that are even more adventurous (and not scared of heights) this week is for you! Edge Walk has opened and you can start to get your tickets to literally walk around the outside of the CN Tower via a trolley and harness system (pic above). It is the first of it’s kind in all of North America, and I’m sure to be a fantastic tourist attraction here in the T-Dot!

Per the website, Edge Walk will operate from May- October and in all weather conditions except for electrical storms and high winds. It may be just me- but I wouldn’t walk around the tower if it was raining, snowing or anything in between! However, if you can do it- I think it would be an amazing experience! Good luck thrill seekers!

Art Battle! (Cont)

At the start I couldn't wait to see what this would become!

 Stunning!

Here I am walking around enjoying the Art Battle!

Jacqueline Poirier beginning her painting

The end result is beautiful! Gets her into the final!

Chen Cao was amazing to watch!

Cao's painting got him into the final!

AB Final Round: Champion...Jacqueline Poirier! Beautiful! Can't believe she did that in 20 min flat!

“Going to Battle” Treat!

As I posted yesterday about the Art Battle taking place in Toronto- I am happy to post today that I went and was blown away by the creativity and talent of the artists that competed! The Battle started with 2 rounds of 8 painters that had 20 minutes to complete a painting (no theme- just pure talent)! While the artists were painting, those in the crowd were able to walk around and get up close to the artists and watch their masterpieces unfold. As you waited with anticipation, some artists were talking to friends, people gathered at the bar and some just stayed in place watching a particular painting unfold- all while listening to some awesome tunes by the in house DJ.

After 20 minutes had gone by, I could not believe what artwork had emerged! Each person that entered the building then had a chance to go around and put his or her vote into the ballot box of the painting/artist that they believed deserved to get to the final. An artist I was amazed by was, Chen Cao, (picture above) who created amazing portraits that seemed to emerge with each brush stoke. What really astonished me what that Cao not only was AB 15 Champion (and I learned sells his paintings at high value) but also was born with cerebral palsy. He was just amazing to watch. In the end, a definite favorite of mine, Jacqueline Poirier, won the championship with a painting done in black and white, with a splash of red to showcase the tree that emerged from drippings on her canvas (picture above)!

One of the best things about this event was that after each round the paintings were auctioned off. (I am quite sad to admit that I placed a bid on a painting and it was sold for a higher price). However, on the flip side to auctioning off some amazing pieces of work- those paintings that didn’t have a bidder were destroyed in what they called, “true tradition of the Art Battle”. I also want to mention here, big thanks to Fred Espina- it was a great event!

Art Battle!

The Battle Begins!

"Battle Treat"!

I just learned about a great event called Art Battle featuring 16 painters that go head to head tonight at The Great Hall in Toronto 7:30pm. But you may ask- what is an "Art Battle"? According to their website, “Art Battle is live competitive painting. The audience watches, cheers, votes and bids in support of the artists and their paintings. All paintings created at AB are auctioned. Paintings that fail to meet the minimum bid may be destroyed”.

If you go to their website, this event looks really exciting to watch! I have never seen anything like this before- but with the brackets and competition that ensues each round- I’m sure it’s quite intense. I can’t even imagine the pressure and adrenaline rush that these artists go through while painting. I’m hoping to try and make it tonight if I can!

It’s Getting Hot Hot Hot!

Beat the Heat!

Toronto is finally feeling like the weather I’m used to in the States! Normally, I wouldn’t have thought Canada could get so hot in the summer- but I have been proven wrong! The temperature this week keeps climbing and our nights are filled with stagnant humidity. I’m still getting used to seeing Celsius on the news but this week has been quite an experience seeing what 40 degrees actually feels like. It’s hot out!

Even though the air-conditioning is running this is the first time since I have been here that it’s been on night and day. For me, (during late July) this is a joyous treat! Normally, the cool air would have been pumping the last month non-stop because extreme heat is what I’m used to. (Hey, DC was built on a swamp)!

I’m heading to the States this weekend, so I will be able to extend this heat wave experience as I continue to travel south. I hope it starts to let up soon, but at least I know a pool is waiting for me. Good luck beating the heat anyway you can!

Summerlicious

“Prix Fixe” Treat!

For someone like me who is constantly trying to find new unique places to visit and dine in Toronto- this is the week to try new restaurants for quite the bargain! It’s Summerlicious in the city and 150 top restaurants in Toronto are offering 3-course prix fixe menus at low costs. Normally I may not try the higher priced restaurants on a whim- but this is the last week to take advantage of such deals around the city (ends July 24th)!

Whether you are looking to try a new spot for lunch or dinner- these deals around Toronto can’t be beat! Lunch prices range from $15-25 and dinners range $25-45 per person. So get out there and try something new!

Squirly's

Squirly's

The mermaid

A "Squirly’s" Treat!

I have found another new "treat" called, Squirly’s! This bar/restaurant is a place in Queen West that you can find a mix of people eating from a diverse menu, listening to a great mix of music and enjoying a microbrew from local areas. When you first walk into Squirly’s you may notice the red and black leopard chairs, paintings on the wall, graffiti downstairs and gigantic mermaid over the bar (picture above). It’s an eclectic spot that is a staple of great food at good prices throughout the week as well. One of my favorite deals is a $4 margarita drink special every Tuesday. I may have mentioned this before but I’ve been on the lookout for a fantastic margarita in Toronto since I left the US (Alero in Washington, DC has the best so far).

The other part of Squirly’s that I enjoy features a heated and covered back garden which is now open to the patio for the summer. The tables in the back garden incorporate the red and black leopard couches and artwork found inside as well. Squirly’s is honestly one of my favorite places to go for an easy night out in Queen West and I highly suggest it!

The Lakeview, Tom Cruise, & Fried Mars Bars

Tom Cruise in Cocktail: Elisabeth Shue works at "Jerry's Diner", which is the Lakeview in Toronto

 The Lakeview Restaurant Today

“Diner” Treat!

Last night I went to a newly renovated staple in Queen West called the Lakeview. It’s open 24 hours with an eclectic vibe that showcases great art, music, food (breakfast 24 hours), and drink specials. And something else about this place is that the movie Cocktail filmed there. If you remember the young days of Tom Cruise, then you would remember this 80s movie where Elisabeth Shue works at Jerry's Diner, which we now know is the Lakeview (picture above). And yes they even have Nachos Tom Cruise on the menu! Some other recent movies filmed there were scenes with Samuel L. Jackson for The Samaritan and recently spotted Robert Pattinson with Cosmopolis.

As part of the Thirsty Thursday Shenanigans, we went to the Lakeview late last night. One thing on the menu that I thought was quite funny was the fried mars bar dessert. I found it quite interesting that someone would fry a candy bar and slather it with ice cream but they do here! I was not the one to order it at our table but let’s just say someone did and the bite I had was delish! Who would have thought?! I’m not one for dessert (except crème brulee on occasion) but this was a very interesting mix of thinking “that’s disgusting”- but loving it once I took a bite! As my brother says, don’t say you don’t like something until you try it!

The Toronto Fringe Festival

"Toronto Fringe Festival" New Treat!

I just came across an amazing event! It’s the Toronto Fringe Festival and it’s the last weekend that you can enjoy it before it wraps up for the summer (ends July 17, 2011). This festival seems to have a bit of everything for all to see!

According to their website, “The Fringe Festival, is Toronto’s largest theatre and performance festival. 140+ productions are featured at 25+ venues across the west end of Toronto, drawing more than 70,000 people over 12 days each year. There’s something for everyone, with musicals, comedies, family programming, drama, dance, improv and anything else you can imagine or offer. Don’t miss the Site Specific productions that take place in unexpected locations like backs of cars or down hidden alleys”. That sounds fantastic right?! They also showcase 8 visual artists throughout the week in the first annual, Visual Fringe

If you have time on your hands this weekend, check out their website and support the arts (100% of the sales go back to the artists)! I can’t wait to check it out!
